Religius wedding
OTHER DENOMINATlONS
All religions have their own special requirements so it is essential that you see
your minister as soon as possible to find out what these are. Most Christian ceremonies
are distinguish between them. For all, apart from Anglican weddings, you must obtain a
certificate or certificate of licence from the
local superintendent registrar. In some cases, if the person performing the marriage isn't
authorised to register it, the registrar may have to be present.
ROMAN CATOLIC
See your priest at least two to three months before you pia n to marry, in order to receive
adeguate instruction. Don't forget to take along baptism and confirmation certificates.
If only one partner is Catholic, permission to marry in a non-Catholic church may be given
but is entirely at the discretion of the priest. The some applies to someone who is not a
Catholic wisning to get married in a Catholic church. It is sometimes possible to arrange for
both ministers to be at the ceremony.
NONCONFORMIST OR FREE CHURCHES
Banns ore not necessary in these churches and you may get married in any church
which is the piace of worship for either you or your partner, whether you live in the parish
not. An outside registrar may have to be present at the ceremony.
ORTODOX
The ceremony is rich in tradition and ritual. This includes Serbian, Greek,
Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian and Cypriot churches.
QUAKERS
The Religious Society of Friends keep their ceremonies as simple as possible, in fact they
have hardly changed since the 17th century. The wedding is held at a worship meeting in
which the coupl make a declaration of marriage. If either partner is not a member of
the Society their application must be approved in writing by two adult
members of the Society.
JEWISH
Jewish weddings ore both religious and civil so therefore two official applications for
marriage ore necessary. When applying to the religious authority under which tne
ceremony is taking piace the couple must be accompanied by at least one witness
(preferably a parent) and have relevant documents (birth certificates, parents' Jewish
marriage lines etc) with them. Most ceremonies take piace in a synagogue, but
con be performed anywhere so long as they ore under a chuppah (wedding
canopy).
REGISTER OFFICE
This ceremony is suitable for those who have no religious beliefs, or those who would
prefer a much simpler ceremony. Maybe they ore divorcees or ore from differing
faiths. You con get married either by certificate or by licence. To marry by certificate the couple
need to have been living in the district far seven days before applying. If you live in
separate districts you must aprir to both the
registrars of both districts. You may then marry after 21 clear days of having given
notice. To marry by licence either of the partners must have lived in the area far 15
days and both must be in the country when noti e is given. The certificate
can be issued
after one clear day. Both certificates ore valid for three months and the ceremony must take
piace in the district where notice has been given. The ceremony is short (about 15
minutes). The couple must have two adult witnesses and you must check beforehand as
to kow many guests you may invite.
BLESSINGS
If you have a civil wedding ceremony, you con, if you wish, have the marriage blessed il
a church immediately afterwards or at some later date. (Although the Catholic church
dos'not provide this, an Anglican minister may agree to hold a servi ce of blessing where one
or both partners ore Catholic.) Properly known as a Servi ce of Prayer and Dedication
it takes piace at the discretion of the minister.
